Hay fever is the common term for seasonal allergies. It is also called allergic rhinitis, which means inflammation inside your nose. Hay fever symptoms mostly affect your nose, eyes, skin, and roof of the mouth.
Types of Allergies-
- Perennial Allergic Rhinitis– Symptoms are present throughout year. Causes -Indoor allergy triggers like pet hair (especially from cats), dust mites, mold, and cockroaches.
- Seasonal Rhinitis– Symptoms will be worse when pollen counts are high during specific seasons.Springtime allergy is the commonest one..You can also develop allergies to other things in the air around you, like smoke, perfume, and car exhaust.
Other Causes
- Asthma or other allergies
- Eczema
- Parents or siblings with allergies
- A home or job where you’re exposed to allergens (allergy triggers) on a regular basis.
Role of Immune system in Hay fever-
The immune system can be divided into innate and adaptive immunity. This is the body’s main mechanism of defense against infection. This immune system is also responsible for pathological allergic reactions to harmless substances. The immune system can easily damage cells. So it is important to limit the response to just those things which are harmful to the body and prevent the immune system attacking harmless substances as in allergic reactions. Both the innate and adaptive immune systems play a role in allergy, which occurs as a result of sensitization to harmless substances in the environmental (e.g. dust and pollen), and hypersensitive reactions upon subsequent exposure to these particles. Allergies such as hay fever results when your immune system attacks a typically harmless substance that you come across in the environment. In case of seasonal hay fever, these include grass, pollen from flowers, trees, and weed pollen as well as outdoor molds.
Precautions-
You can ease your allergy symptoms by avoiding or reducing your exposure to triggers. For Seasonal allergies –
